Falafels Two Ways with Homemade Tzatziki Sauce
I have been a fan of falafels for as long as I can remember. They're like the healthy more delicious versions of hush puppies - kind of. Falafels are a deep-fried ball or patty made from ground chickpeas, fava beans, (or in this case sweet potatoes) commonly served in the Middle East. I found a recipe online for sweet potato falafels which called for chickpea flour and since #1 I don't have a Whole Foods near by to purchase said flour and #2 I also lack money in general, I decided to just mix the sweet potato in with a falafel mix I already had in the pantry considering the only ingredients in this mix was chickpea flour, whole wheat flour, and spices I figured it would work...and it did...ohhhh it did.
Sweet Potato Falafel
makes about 5-6 small falafels
1/2 package of falafel mix such as the one above
1 steamed and mashed sweet potato
1 tsp yellow curry powder
1/2 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp garlic powder
enough oil to cover the bottom of a frying pan
Method:
1.Mix falafel ingredients and let sit for 5 min
2.Heat oil until it reaches 250 degrees F (I just pinch off a bit of falafel, throw it in the pan and see if it sizzles)
3.Fry falafels until dark brown on each side ~ 3 min. on each side.
Chickpea Falafels
1/2 package of falafel mix
1/2 water
I added a handful of cooked corn just to give it a little texture and it reminded me of corn nuggets (yum)
same directions as above
Tzatziki Sauce
1 cup plain Greek Yogurt OR sourcream
1/4 tsp salt
1 TBS Tahini paste
1/2 TBS sugar
1 tsp Sriracha
1/2 lemon juice
I love falafels and haven't made them at home in forever! the sweet potato mixed in sounds fabulous.
