Mossfire is a place I have visited on a couple of occasions but it was long before I was a crazy picture taking blogger woman so I had no choice but to revisit it for lunch this week. The last time I was there I ordered the vegetarian black bean sandwich, which was delicious, but I forced myself to try something new...there were several things I wanted to try like the new ka-pow! tempeh tacos and BBQ shrimp tostada but my waiter suggested the Mahi Mahi fish tacos - don't mind if I do!

The fish tacos, which comes with your choice of salmon or mahi mahi blackened on the grill and served with 2 soft or 3 crunchy tortillas, pico de gallo, sour cream, cheese, and shredded cabbage served with black beans & rice (or your choice of any side). My initial response was "geez, could they spare the fish?" but it actually was a lot more filling than it looked. The tacos were tasty, and the fresh pico de gallo was out of this world, my only complaint was that because the fish was so heavily blackened, it was slightly dry. I know that blackening seasonings are supposed to be heavy but these pieces were so small I think it was just too overpowering. It became better when I flaked the fish into smaller pieces and added the beans and rice with some pico into the taco.
My mom ordered the Mayport shrimp and Chicken, which was pan seared jumbo shrimp & chicken breast with your choice of poblano pesto alfredo or sun dried tomato alfredo, topped with pico de gallo, parmesan cheese & your choice of mashed potatoes and veggies or black beans and rice. She originally wanted the tomato sauce but they were out of sun dried tomatoes so she opted for the poblano pesto. She was worried that the poblano pesto would be too spicy but it wasn't, it just had that pure peppery goodness flavor without all the excess heat. The shrimp weren't the greatest, they had a slight frozen taste to them and she only had about three shrimp on her plate, she claimed it was much better the last time she got it (with the sun dried tomato sauce). The vegetables were good and the mashed potatoes had a little kick to them, which mom wasn't too fond of but I thought they were pretty tasty.
Mossfire definitely puts an interesting spin on Mexican cuisine, they offer various items that you won't find anywhere else in Jax. While the food is somewhat inconsistent, I would definitely say it's worth a gander and a sit-in for a taco or two!
