Hovan Mediterranean Gourmet Review

You can always usually catch me wandering around the streets of Five Points, exploring Grassroots Natural Food Market or grabbing a coffee at Starbucks, however all these years I have never seemed to venture into Hovan. It's smack dab in the middle of everything and I must have passed by it hundreds of times but for some reason I've never eaten there...well, until today at least.

Word on the street is that you can get a lot of bang for your buck here at Hovan Mediterranean Gourmet, they serve up all the Greek classics like falafels, hummmus, tabbouleh, gyros, and everything in between. You can choose whether you just want a sandwich, or make it a combo and pair it with either one or two sides and a drink.

I decided on just a classic falafel (it was so large and filling the sides weren't necessary). A traditional falafel is served on pita bread (or unleavened bread) with shredded lettuce, tomato, falafels (duh), and tzatziki (sesame paste) spread. This falafel was one of the best I've ever had. The pita was soft, chewy, and fresh, the tzaztiki sauce was authentic, and the falafel was seasoned well but I just wished it was a tad more crunchy on the exterior, it's almost like they baked their falafel.

My friend ordered the Chicken roll with cheese, lettuce and tomato. For sides she choose the pita chips and hummus and the Mediterranean salad which was traditional cheese, tomatoes, black olives, cucumbers, feta, chopped parsley, and dressing. We both didn't really care for the hummus, it was okay but a tad on the vinegary side for me. The Mediterranean salad was a win however, it was so good my friend mentioned getting it for both of her sides next time!

The Verdict: It's kind of a shame it took me this long to eat at Hovan's, all that time wasted...all those falafels that could have been eaten. If you're craving some Greek food, Hovan's is definitely the place for you! It's casual atmosphere, authentic cuisine, and quick counter service make it a place worth coming back to!
