Today I had an Epik Burger!

I have heard tales of a small burger shop on Atlantic Blvd. that offers an array of funky burger options, crazy flavored fries, and tasty shakes. When I checked out the menu online I was excited to see that they actually had veggieburger options! usually the vegeburger sits alone and forgotten, it waits in the freezer for months on end and when someone finally orders it, it merely gets nuked then slapped together with some boring lettuce and government issued cheese. Not at Epik Burger though....ohhhhh no. Along with catering to vegans/vegetarians they also have a multitude of gluten free buns and sides, in addition to that their chicken is hormone free and they give you the option of grass fed beef for a small upcharge.

I simply had to try "The Divine Vegetarian" which was a tasty combo of a house made black bean veggieburger patty, lettuce, tomato, caramelized onions, balsamic mayo, brie cheese, all on a brioche bun. I also opted for the combo which included your choice of fries, cider vinegar slaw, or house salad and a drink. I was impressed with the size, although I found it a little hard to handle (which was probably my fault, I tend to be taco and sandwich challenged). The burger was tasty! The meat-to-bread ratio was right and the flavors all worked well together. My only complaint is that part way through the meal my bun became pretty soggy and my filling proceeded to spill out, thus requiring the assistance of a fork which kind of defeats the purpose of eating a burger in the first place. The sweet potato fries were awesome! They were hot and had that slight crispness to them, they offer a multitude of dipping choices for the fries but I thought they paired just fine with good old ketchup.

My mom ordered "The Parmesan Chicken Burger" which was chicken breast, tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, and fresh basil leaves. She also opted for the combo and got it with the Parmesan truffle fries. Overall she was very pleased with the meal and unlike me her bun remained un-soggy throughout the meal. She found that the burger was a little bland when she didn't have a basil leaf included in the bite, they might want to consider making a pesto spread for this sandwich so that the basil flavor would be more consistent throughout. The fries were crisp, hot, and flavorful, we found them to be a tad heavy on the salt (but it was easy to brush off).

The Verdict:

You might pay a little more than you're used to for an Epik burger but I think that the quality is definitely reflected in your food. You can tell that this place really cares about what goes into their product and it shows. Whether you're in the mood for a quirky burger, crazy seasoned fries, or even a milkshake, Epik Burger is definitely worth a try! Don't let it's seemingly small exterior fool you, this truly is a burger place of epic proportions.
